Africa with 205 more dead already has 27,984 due to covid-19

The covid-19 caused the death of 205 people in Africa in the last 24 hours, half of them in South Africa, being now counted in the region 1,195,297 infected by the new coronavirus, according to official data.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), which gathers the data of the 55 members of this organization, since Monday another 7360 infected have been registered.

The total number of deaths from this pandemic in Africa is 27,984.

Southern Africa continues to register the highest number of cases and deaths due to the new coronavirus, with 652,440 infected and 14,058 dead.

South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent and the fifth in the world, accounts for 611,450 infected and 13,159 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected zone by the pandemic, with 213,864 infected and 8063 dead, followed by West Africa: 155,715 infected and 2327 dead.

East Africa accounts for 120,472 cases and 2510 deaths due to covid-19, while Central Africa accounts for 52,806 infected and 1026 dead from the new coronavirus.

Egypt, which is the second country with more deaths, after South Africa, has 5280 dead and 97,478 infected. It is followed by Algeria, with 1433 dead and 42,302 infected.

Among the five countries most affected are Nigeria, with 52,548 infected and 1004 dead, and Sudan: 12,836 infected and 812 dead, the same counted on Monday.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (with 3522 cases and 37 deaths), followed by Mozambique (3440 cases and 21 deaths), Angola (2222 cases and 100 deaths), Guinea-Bissau (2205 cases and 34 deaths) and Sao Tome and Principe (891 cases and 15 deaths), according to data released by the official authorities of these countries.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), updated the data on 23rd and registered 4926, an increase of 34 people compared to the 4892 infected registered on 1st August, and 83 deaths, a number it has maintained since the beginning of the month.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 809,000 deaths and infected more than 23.4 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
