Covid-19: Angola announces 31 more cases and reaches 90 deaths

Angola has registered 31 more infections by the new coronavirus and two deaths, adding 90 deaths by covid-19, the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda announced this Tuesday.

Among the new cases one was identified in Lubango, Huila province, imported from Luanda, and the others in this province, being 24 female and seven male.

Two Angolans, aged 47 and 76, have died, with another 35 people recovered in the last 24 hours. At laboratory level, 774 samples were processed.

Franco Mufinda noted that the decentralization of quarantine was also initiated, which allowed 266 passengers who were detained in Portugal, and returned on a flight of the Angolan airline TAAG, to benefit from home quarantine.

Angola has 1966 cases of covid-19, of which 90 died, 757 recovered and 1209 were active, of which four were critical and 19 serious.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 774,832 deaths and infected more than 21.9 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Africa, there are 25,884 confirmed deaths in more than 1.1 million people in 55 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics on the continent.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases. Angola registers 90 deaths and 1966 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 4821 cases), Cape Verde (36 deaths and 3253 cases), Guinea-Bissau (33 deaths and 2149 cases), Mozambique (19 deaths and 2991 cases) and São Tomé e Príncipe (15 deaths and 885 cases).

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
