Covid-19: Angola registers two more deaths and becomes the Portuguese-speaking African country with the most deaths

Angola has a further 27 cases of covid-19 infection and two deaths, bringing the number of infected to 1906 and the number of deaths to 88, health authorities announced this Sunday.

The data were provided by the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, during the daily epidemiological assessment in Luanda.

The new cases are from the province of Luanda, 21 male and six female, aged between 14 and 86 years.

Both deaths are related to two Angolan citizens, aged 56 and 76.

A total of 29 samples were processed, out of a total of 49,385.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 766,000 deaths and infected more than 21.5 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

In Africa, there are 25,337 confirmed deaths in more than 1.1 million people infected in 55 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics from that continent.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases. Angola has 88 deaths and 1906 cases and Equatorial Guinea has 83 deaths and 4821 cases. Cape Verde (34 dead and 3163 cases), Guinea-Bissau (33 dead and 2117 cases), Mozambique (19 dead and 2855 cases) and São Tomé e Príncipe (15 dead and 885 cases).
