Angola adds 53 more cases of covid-19 and is among the Portuguese-speaking African countries with the most deaths

The health authorities announced this Thursday 53 more cases of covid-19 and three deaths, which place Angola among the Portuguese-speaking African countries with the most deaths (83), along with Equatorial Guinea, although it is among those with the fewest infections.

According to the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, among the 53 new cases, all from Luanda, 15 are female and 38 male, aged between 23 and 71.

Three more deaths were registered of Angolan citizens, one woman aged 76 and two men aged 54 and 60.

In total, Angola has 1815 infections, with 83 deaths, 584 patients recovered (plus seven in the last 24 hours) and 1148 active, of which four were critically ill, with mechanical ventilation, and 25 severe.

Franco Mufinda again asked the population to help "flatten" the exponential rise of cases and deaths in the country, and recalled that from Saturday 15, the process of quarantine and isolation at home will be initiated, provided that certain conditions are met, including the exact location and means of communication.

"The isolated subject may not have contact with other outside entities, so that the needs will be met, but putting them at the entrance of the house," said the Secretary of State, in a reference to food, for example.

Franco Mufinda also said that being infected and carrying out his internment at home puts the other members of the family in the same condition, leaving "the vulnerable people" in the responsibility of the state.

He added that home quarantine depends a lot on the evaluation, which will be done by health authorities.

"The end of isolation or quarantine can go up to 14 days, it depends a lot on the evolution of the disease and the laboratory results," Franco Mufinda said, calling for vigilance on the part of the neighbors and the community, and recalling that sanctions are planned for those who violate the quarantine or isolation.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 749,000 deaths and infected more than 20.6 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

In Africa, there are 23,616 confirmed deaths in more than a million people in 55 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of cases and deaths (4821 infected and 83 deaths), followed by Cape Verde (3073 cases and 33 deaths), Mozambique (2638 cases and 19 deaths), Guinea-Bissau (2088 cases and 29 deaths), Angola (1815 infected and 83 deaths) and São Tomé and Príncipe (878 cases and 15 deaths).
