Covid-19: Africa counts 23,582 deaths due to illness

The total number of deaths from covid-19 is this Tuesday of 23,582 in Africa, a continent with more than one million infected by the disease, which mainly affects the southern and northern regions, according to the most recent official data.

The continent accounted for 23,582 deaths (plus 329 deaths in the last 24 hours) caused by the new coronavirus, in a universe of 1,055,964 infected (more 8746), with the number of people declared as recovered from the disease rising to 744,438 (23,663 more), according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), which gathers the most recent data from the official reports of the 55 member countries of this organization.

The largest number of cases and deaths of covid-19 continue to be registered in Southern Africa, with 593,577 infected and 11,312 fatalities.

In this region, South Africa, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 563,598 infected and 10,621 dead.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 178,667 infected and 7180 dead and in West Africa the number of cases has risen to 141,369 and that of fatalities to 2099.

In the East Africa region, there are 91,883 cases and 2028 deaths and in Central Africa 50,518 cases of infection and 963 deaths are recorded.

Egypt is the second country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, accounting for 95,666 infected and 5035 deaths, following Algeria, which has 35,156 cases and 1299 fatalities.

Among the five most affected countries are Nigeria, with 46,867 infected and 950 deaths, and Sudan, with 11,956 cases and 781 fatalities.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (2883 cases and 32 deaths), followed by Mozambique (2411 cases and 16 deaths), Guinea-Bissau (2088 cases and 29 deaths), Angola (1679 infected and 78 dead) and São Tomé and Príncipe (878 cases and 15 dead).

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 4821 infected and 83 deaths, a number that has remained constant for several weeks.
