Lubango and Moçâmedes ready to join the national electricity system

The provinces of Huíla and Namibe will be connected to the national electricity system using hydroelectric power by the end of the year. The construction project for the Gove-Matala power transmission line and associated substations, stretching over 200 kilometers, is expected to be completed in October.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Water, seen by VerAngola, the project is already approximately 80 percent complete. It will connect the Gove Hydroelectric Plant in Huambo to the Matala Sectioning Station in Huíla, covering a length of over 213 kilometers and capable of transporting approximately 682 MVA (Megavolt-Amperes) of power.

The project also includes the construction of electrical substations, particularly the Lubango Leste substation, which will power the railway substation, ensuring continued regular electricity supply to the province of Namibe.

This project – "of strategic importance for the country," as stated by the ministry – will benefit the municipalities of Matala, Quipungo, Capelongo, Lubango, Humpata, Chibia, Bibala, and Moçâmedes, directly benefiting more than 350,000 families in the region.

Also in the southern region of the country, the construction project for a 400-kilometer power transmission line is underway, connecting Belém do Dango, in Huambo, to Nombungo, in Lubango, and associated substations.

The construction is expected to be completed in early 2027, and the Belém do Dango substation is also planned to be expanded. A new substation and other associated electrical equipment are currently being built in Nombungo.

The power transmission line will be 343 kilometers long and will primarily improve the quality and reliability of the electricity supply to Huíla province.

This will cover a much larger population, reaching nearly 1,000,000 consumers.

"In addition to providing greater dignity to the inhabitants of southern Angola, the two projects will also foster the region's economy, boosting it, creating jobs, and leveraging the southern region's industrial hub, with a special emphasis on the extractive mining industry," the ministry added in a statement.
