"The Government of the Republic of Angola has followed with particular attention and concern the latest events registered in the Republic of Niger" and "in the face of this serious occurrence" expresses "its firm condemnation of the acts carried out in the Republic of Niger by the military, by this is a serious attack on the country's constitutional order, and because it constitutes an unacceptable violation of the democratic principles on which the legitimacy of the power instituted in 2021 is based, through free and democratic elections".

Nigerian military announced on Wednesday night the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum, democratically elected in 2021.

The joint military coup leader presented himself as the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP).

Niger's partners, including the United States, France and the UN, have already condemned the coup d'état.

Mohamed Bazoum remained hostage this Thursday with his family at his official residence in Niamey, but he is in good health, according to people close to him.

In the communiqué, João Lourenço demands "the immediate release" of Mohamed Bazoum, his family and collaborators, "in the conviction that this will create a climate that urgently favors a national understanding and allows the restoration of democratic legitimacy in the country".

Angola also expresses support for the position taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in vehemently condemning the coup and urges this organization "to take all necessary steps to quickly resume the functioning of the legitimate institutions of the State in the Republic of Niger ".
