In a statement that summarizes the conclusions of the IX Extraordinary Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Commission of UNITA, held on Thursday, the party led by Adalberto Costa Júnior says that Angola, almost a year after the last general elections, "is experiencing a serious crisis".
The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) says that the country "is heading towards a political, economic and social disaster of large proportions", adding that they want to "find ways to defend democracy and fundamental freedoms".
Among UNITA's concerns are actions that attack the democratic State and the rule of law, persecution of political opponents, disrespect for the will of voters, violation of human rights, generalized corruption, hijacking of public media, instrumentalization of the judiciary and freezing of accounts banks of the opposition parties.
UNITA also accuses the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, of disrespecting the Constitution and the law.
"The Standing Committee of UNITA's Political Commission draws the attention of national and international public opinion to the consequences of the climate of violence, instability and insecurity that the regime has been installing within society and citizens, as a conducive environment for the simulation of attempts and mask the failure of its governance", reads the communiqué
UNITA also reiterates that it is available for dialogue with all the living forces in society and has given guidance to its parliamentary group to take legislative initiatives for the defense of the democratic State and the rule of law.
