Catholic Church will hold nine days of prayer for the stability of the general elections

The Catholic Church will hold a “novena”, nine days of prayer, for peace and stability in the country's August 24 general elections, the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST) announced this Friday.

:

"In the afternoon (Thursday) we were dealing with the novena for the next elections and also the role of the church in the next general elections in Angola", said the spokesman of CEAST, Belmiro Chissengueti, in the balance of the first day of the second Plenary Assembly of Bishops.

According to the Catholic prelate, in previous years prayers were held for the elections at the parish level: "And this time we decided to introduce this element of prayer (the novena)".

"It is our mission, after all we are believers and what identifies us is precisely prayer, so that the Lord guides our steps on the path of peace, after all, the nation whose God is the Lord is happy", justified the spokesman and also Bishop of Cabinda.

The second Plenary Assembly of the Angolan Episcopal Conference celebrates its second day of work this Friday and runs until the 21st of this month.

At the opening of the conclave, the Catholic bishops urged politicians to make speeches that "elevate patriotism and citizenship", reiterating the need for "tolerance" and "avoid insulting and incendiary speeches, which tend to trivialize", in an electoral environment.

According to the president of CEAST, José Manuel Imbamba, it is necessary to prioritize "mainly politicians, for speeches that awaken the nobility of patriotism, citizenship, harmony and social friendship that guarantee the people to believe in a better future".

The archbishop recalled that Angola is going to elections on 24 August, considering that the country "will be called upon once again to live one of the most significant events in its history", hoping that the process will take place "with great joy and exemplary social life".

For the fifth general elections in the country's political history, called for August 24, the Constitutional Court approved eight candidates.

At least 14.3 million voters, of which 22,000 are abroad, are eligible to exercise their right to vote in the elections, which elect the head of the list of the most voted candidate as President of the Republic.
