Catholic bishops call for “tolerance” and political speeches that “elevate patriotism”

The Catholic bishops urged politicians this Thursday to make speeches that “elevate patriotism and citizenship”, reiterating the need for “tolerance” and “avoiding insulting and incendiary speeches, which tend to trivialize”, in an electoral environment.

It is necessary to give priority "especially to politicians, for speeches that awaken the nobility of patriotism, citizenship, harmony and social friendship that guarantee the people to believe in a better future", said the president of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST), Jose Manuel Imbamba.

The official recalled that Angola is going to elections on 24 August, considering that the country "will be called upon once again to live one of the most significant events in its history", hoping that the process will take place "with great joy and exemplary social life".

However, he stressed, it is also "a moment of great and serious responsibility" because once again the ability to show that Angolans "seek to be true brothers to each other" will be put to the test.

José Manuel Imbamba was speaking at the opening of the second Plenary Assembly of CEAST, which runs until the 21st of this month, bringing together all the Catholic clergy in Luanda.

In his speech, he reiterated the calls for "increased tolerance, respect for State institutions and political differences and to avoid insulting, defamatory and incendiary speeches that tend to trivialize, offend, disrespect dignity and good foreign names and blind and violent fanaticism, for a harmonious electoral environment".

He also asked opinion makers and analysts to "control their emotions more" to "avoid pushing citizens to wrong conclusions against third parties".

For the CEAST leader, false news "should not be turned into a weapon against the honor of others", urging the public and private media to become "authentic schools for life, citizenship, freedom, peace, unity, fraternity, justice, ethics and truth".

"Let us always bear in mind that earthly peace is born of love of neighbor, absolutely necessary for its edification is the firm will to respect the dignity of others and the assiduous practice of fraternity", he noted.

The Archbishop of Saurimo also defended the need to "intensify" civic education actions, especially in the communities, within the scope of the August elections.
