Luanda provincial government rejects opposition march due to security risks

The provincial government of Luanda rejected the holding of a march by opposition political parties that wanted to demand “equal treatment in the electoral process”, scheduled for Saturday, for “compromising security and public order”.

:

At issue is the holding of a march under the slogan "Require equal treatment in the electoral process of August 24", in which Angolan opposition parties and coalitions would participate, including the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola – Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE), Social Renewal Party (PRS), Democratic Bloc (BD), and the political project PRA-JA Servir Angola, led by Abel Chivukuvuku.

The provincial government "recommends not carrying out" the initiative, considering that there is "a risk of compromising security and public order", not only because two marches are called for the same day, with the same schedule and itinerary, but also because they appear " political projects not approved by the Constitutional Court" that will not run in the elections "and therefore do not have the legitimacy to demand equal treatment in the electoral process".

The Luanda executive alludes to PRA-JÁ Servir Angola, whose legalization was successively made unfeasible by the Constitutional Court, leading the coordinator of the political project to run for the general elections integrated in the UNITA lists, in which he is number 2 (candidate for vice-president). .

In the communiqué, the provincial government also urges parties "with legitimacy to participate in the elections of August 24, 2022, to use the existing mechanisms of political and institutional consultation at the level of the Provincial Electoral Commission (CPE) and to promote marches calling for the legally admissible votes in this Electoral Campaign period".

The Revolutionary Movement Angola called for a demonstration for Saturday demanding "Freedom for political prisoners now!".
