João Lourenço informed Cyril Ramaphosa about the mediation process between Kinshasa and Kigali

The President, João Lourenço, this Thursday informed his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, about the mediation process to normalize relations between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo) and Rwanda, according to a statement from the Presidency.

In the statement, published on the social network Facebook, it is noted that João Lourenço, who leads this mediation process, and Cyril Ramaphosa spoke on the phone in the early afternoon.

"In the contact, the head of state noted the progress that diplomatic efforts have registered, with a concrete result being the holding, at this moment in Luanda, of the meeting of the Rwanda-Democratic Republic of Congo Permanent Joint Commission, which had not been held for ten years and which was one of the decisions of the recent tripartite Summit in Luanda, under the leadership of President João Lourenço", details the statement.

The South African leader "expressed his interest in having at the next SADC [Southern African Development Community] summit, scheduled for next August, detailed information on the mediation process that Angola carried out in favor of understanding" between Kinshasa and Kigali.

"The two Presidents agreed to use conventional diplomatic mechanisms for the circulation of information in order to keep SADC bodies abreast of developments."

Tension between Rwanda and DRCongo has grown exponentially in recent months, following the resumption in March of fighting between the army and the March 23 rebel movement (M23), which according to Kinshasa is supported by the neighboring country, an accusation denied by Kigali.

Luanda received the mandate from the African Union to mediate the tension between the two countries at the Malabo summit last May.

The communiqué ends by mentioning that Ramaphosa "wanted Angola to hold peaceful elections in an atmosphere of harmony next August".

Angola will hold its fifth general election on 24 August this year, with eight candidates, including seven political parties and a coalition.

In this scrutiny, the President of the Republic will be indirectly elected.
