In a letter that Lusa had access to and signed by five of his descendants (Isabel, José Filomeno "Zenu", Welwitschea "Tchizé", Joess and José Eduardo Paulino "Coreon Dú"), the children of the former President of the Republic express "deep gratitude to the people of Angola" and to all who share their sadness, asking for respect for the mourning.

"Whatever the outcome of the next elections, in the future, we, the family, together with the institutions and the President-elect, will collaborate in the union of the Nation and, to organize with the necessary time the conditions for the tribute and the national funeral of the Father of the Nation. , our father, Eng. José Eduardo dos Santos, so that one day, in dignity and respect, he may rest in peace in the land of his ancestors", promise the eldest children, in the letter.

"We, the sons of Eng. José Eduardo dos Santos, appeal to everyone to respect our customs, our ancestral values and our religious beliefs. Our father has this right and no one can contest it", they appeal, stressing that in African tradition the time of mourning is "a time of reflection and reconciliation".

The family of José Eduardo dos Santos, who died on 8 July in Barcelona, and the government are involved in a legal dispute over the delivery and transfer of the body of the former head of state, who has eight children by five women.

On the one hand, there are the five older brothers who, in this letter, refuse to celebrate the funeral before the elections in Angola, where legal proceedings are being carried out against Isabel dos Santos; on the other, is the widow and mother of three other children of José Eduardo dos Santos, Ana Paula dos Santos, who had been estranged from her husband for a few years, reappearing at her side in recent months.

Ana Paula dos Santos was the Government interlocutor when her husband was hospitalized in the Barcelona clinic, where he ended up dying, and is supported by the Government, which intends to hold a State funeral in Luanda, but has seen the end of the seven days it decreed. for national mourning without the presence of the body at the wake, depending on the decision of the Spanish courts.

Essentially, the election campaign is at stake, which, in the children's opinion, compromises the obsequies.

"The hasty organization of a national funeral constitutes an unacceptable political recovery of a man whose political work now belongs to the common Angolan heritage and to all Angolans", they write, stressing that the funeral should take place after the elections on 24 August.

So that everyone can return to "reason, serenity and consensus", the children also express some "desires".

First, that all the causes of the father's death be duly investigated, since more tests were requested, after the preliminary results of the autopsy were released, which point to natural causes.

They also ask for "all physical and safety conditions" to be ensured for a national funeral, and a mausoleum to be built to house their remains "in a dignified and honorable manner".

In Luanda, works are already visible on a huge plot of land surrounded by fences, next to the Dr. António Agostinho Neto, where the body of the first President rests, which could be the space chosen by the Government to erect a new pantheon.

Last week, a source close to the process, heard by Lusa, had already indicated that the executive would create conditions to welcome the remains of Eduardo dos Santos in a pantheon.
