Derailment forces the interruption of Moçâmedes Railroad connection

The derailment of a wagon on the outskirts of Lubango, Huila province, forced the interruption of rail traffic of Moçâmedes Railways (CFM), the company announced in a statement.

The incident occurred near the Mapunda 3rd class station and was caused by the derailment of one of the 17 wagons of a train carrying iron ore to the port of Sacomar (Namibe), causing no casualties.

Due to the accident, about 75 meters of track and respective sleepers were damaged, and repair work has already been started and is expected to be completed next Sunday.

The statement said that a technical assessment is being made to determine the causes of the derailment, and a rescue train has been activated to remove the remaining wagons with cargo, now stored at the CFM central station.
