Speaking to the Lusa Agency, Téte António said that the Angolan state has been following the case, remaining in contact not only through the Angolan embassy in Cuba, but through all the diplomatic channels they have at their disposal.

"The student was convicted and benefits from consular protection, as any Angolan citizen who is in this situation or even without being in this situation," the minister said.

The minister stressed that, after the conviction, Angola has specific agreements with Cuba, which it will use, namely "diplomatic mechanisms to continue dealing with the case."

When asked if one of these mechanisms could be the extradition request, Téte António preferred not to get into details.

"I don't want to go into details, I just want to say that there are legal instruments signed between us and we will use them, through diplomatic channels, to continue dealing with this case," he stressed.

At issue is the sentencing of Angolan student Armindo Leitão Jeremias, a final year student in the Health Information Systems course, to 20 years in prison for being found guilty of the murder of one of his professors.

The Angolan embassy in Cuba, through the lawyers that follow the process, may still appeal the sentence before the Cuban Supreme Court.

Armindo Leitão Jeremias was detained for nine months until the trial, and the case was disclosed by colleagues, who shared the information on social networks, calling for the intervention of the authorities.

In June, Marcos Vilhena, a colleague and friend of the student, told Lusa that one day before the teacher's body was found 150 meters from the student's house, who claims innocence, Armindo Jeremias had asked for help with expenses of just over 200 dollars.

According to Marcos Vilhena, the teacher, who at the time of his death was responsible for logistics in the Faculty of Health Technology, was known for helping students in this type of situation.
