Covid-19: Africa with 1295 more dead and 47,788 more infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 1295 more deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 168,478 deaths, and 47,788 new cases, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the African continent has a total of 6,635,522 infected since the pandemic began, while those recovered from the disease now number 5,813,540, up 36,187 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region of the continent, with 3,195,576 infected and 87,871 covid-19 associated deaths. Within this region, South Africa accounts for 2,422,151 infected and 71,431 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has reached 1,914,653 cases and 53,806 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa accounts for 794,410 infections and 16,837 deaths, and the West African region records 526,711 infections and 6825 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest infections and deaths: 204,172 cases and 3139 deaths, respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, records 19,336 deaths and 582,638 cases, followed by Egypt, with 16,514 deaths and 284,170 infected, and Morocco, which has the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 606,871 cases, but fewer deaths than the previous two countries, with 9697 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are also Ethiopia, with 4381 deaths and 279,629 infections, and Algeria, with 4189 deaths and 168,668 infected.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1388 deaths and 117,660 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic and Angola counts 1003 deaths associated with the disease and 42,486 infected accumulated.

Cape Verde records 298 deaths associated with the disease and 33,721 infections, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 8880 cases, Guinea-Bissau counts 74 deaths and 4387 infected and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2432 infections.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 4,190,383 deaths worldwide, among more than 195.8 million cases of infection with the new coronavirus, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the UK, India, South Africa, Brazil and Peru.
