Covid-19: country reaches 1000 deaths and adds 178 new cases

The country has recorded six more covid-19-associated deaths, bringing the total to 1,000, and 178 new positive cases in the past 24 hours, health officials announced Wednesday.

The new cases were reported in the provinces of Lunda Norte (86), Luanda (27), Cunene (22), Moxico (10), Huila (8), Benguela (7), Huambo (6), Lunda Sul (5), Zaire (3), Cabinda (2) and the provinces of Kwanza Norte and Uige with one case each.

According to the epidemiological bulletin of the National Directorate of Public Health, released Wednesday, the six deaths were recorded in the provinces of Moxico, Huila, Cunene, Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul and there were 222 recoveries of the disease.

At least 2710 samples by RT-PCR were processed in this period by Angolan laboratories with the cumulative pointing to 805,156 samples processed with a positivity rate of 5.3 percent.

Angola, which has been in a state of public calamity for more than a year and already records the community circulation of the new covid-19 variants, totals 42,288 positive cases, 35,964 recovered, 1000 deaths and 5324 active cases.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 4,179,675 deaths worldwide, among more than 195.2 million cases of infection by the new coronavirus, according to the most recent balance sheet from Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the UK, India, South Africa, Brazil and Peru.
