Covid-19: Africa records 159,719 deaths in close to 6.3 million cases

Africa registers 159,719 deaths due to covid-19, a total of 6,281,998 cases of infection with the new coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, according to official regional data released this Wednesday.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number recovered is 5,513,426.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 2,994,979 cases and 82,009 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,311,232 cases and 67,676 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, reached 1,807,199 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and 51,610 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa has 770,888 infections and 16,323 deaths, and the West Africa region has 509,867 infections and 6,660 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, with 199,065 and 3,117 respectively.

Egypt, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 16,457 deaths and 283,813 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 17,821 deaths and 554,911 cases, and Morocco, which accounts for the second highest number of infections in across the continent, 562,416 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, with 9486 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are Ethiopia, with 4359 deaths and 277,877 infections, and Algeria, with 3979 deaths and 155,784 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1158 deaths and 102,009 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, and Angola accounts for 970 deaths associated with the disease and 41,061 accumulated infections.

Cape Verde registers 296 deaths associated with the disease and 33,356 infections, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 8848 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers 73 deaths and 4087 infected and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2413 infections.
