Covid-19: Angola with two deaths, 83 new cases and 143 recoveries in 24 hours

Angola registered 83 new cases of covid-19 in 24 hours, as well as two deaths and 143 recoveries, public health authorities announced Tuesday.

Of the new cases, 40 were registered in Luanda province, 10 in Huambo, six in Huila, five in Benguela, three in Cunene, three in Zaire, two in Kwanza Sul and one in Cabinda, with ages between 2 and 71 years old, 46 being female and 37 male, said the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, in a statement.

According to the health authorities, two deaths have been registered, one of them in Moxico and one in Huila, with the victims aged between 9 and 71 years old and being one male and the other female.

A total of 143 people were considered recovered from the disease, of which 106 in Luanda, 23 in Cunene, 10 in Huambo, three in Lunda Sul and one in Moxico, aged between 1 and 78 years.

Angola now totals 40,138 cases since the pandemic began, including 941 deaths and 34,500 recovered cases, with 4697 active cases.

Among the active cases, 11 are in critical condition and seven are in serious condition.

Laboratories processed 2114 samples in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 758,817 samples, with a cumulative positivity rate of 5.3 percent.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 4,044,816 deaths worldwide, among more than 187.2 million cases of infection, according to the most recent AFP tally.

According to the latest data from the African Union's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent has now surpassed more than 5,997,410 cases of covid-19 since the pandemic began, including 152,577 deaths.

The disease is transmitted by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
