Government says malaria outbreak in country begins to decline

The outbreak of malaria that Angola has registered in recent months, with four million cases and over 5,000 deaths, “is declining”, announced the secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda.

The government official spoke to the press on the sidelines of the seminar on the Mapping of Risks with an Impact on Public Health, which started in Luanda and runs until Thursday, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Franco Mufinda said that the country had an epidemic outbreak of malaria across the country, which most seriously affected children.

"But we are managing to respond to malaria. We are talking about four million cases and just over 5000 deaths", said the government official, noting that the epidemiological situation has been analyzed daily with the provincial health offices, which share information on the situation on the ground.

According to the Secretary of State for Public Health, despite attention to the covid-19 pandemic, the Government has already managed to purchase medicines that it is distributing to health facilities, as well as rapid tests to test and treat.

"This helps us a lot at this time to have fewer serious cases and to avoid more deaths," said the government official, recalling that the situation was serious in Huambo, Benguela and also in Luanda.

"On weekends and throughout the week, we are in hospitals to measure sensitivity, guiding colleagues, making the means [available] to increasingly reduce the negative impact of malaria. The tendency is for the process to decline, the cases have dropped a lot," he said.

"I remember that when I went to Huambo I found the hospital overcrowded, above capacity, around 150 percent today of 300 inpatients [in the past], we are talking about 56, this to bring an image of what is happening in the units," he added.

In addition to Huambo, Luanda has also greatly reduced overcrowding, continued Franco Mufinda, indicating that "places where there were two children or even three sharing the same bed, today there are empty beds, this is the expression that the answer is being giving is having an effect".
