Next repatriation is for citizens who are in Portugal

The Government of Angola has announced that Portugal, where around 7000 Angolans are waiting to return to their country, whose borders are closed due to the covid-19 pandemic, is the next destination for the repatriation of citizens, without advancing dates.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State and head of the Security House of the President of the Republic, Pedro Sebastião, who is also coordinator of the multisectoral commission for combating and preventing covid-19.

According to the minister, at a press conference in Luanda on the epidemiological situation, repatriation follows criteria that have to do with the number of citizens and their location, the possibilities of accommodation (to comply with the institutional quarantine) and aspects related to logistics, including financial aspects.

Pedro Sebastião explained that the repatriation from neighboring countries, such as Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Namibia has been done by land, while outside the African continent, aircraft from the flag company, TAAG, are used.

“We seek to monetize as much as possible. That is how tomorrow [Thursday] citizens who are in Brazil will arrive, an aircraft of ours will fulfill another mission and we try to combine the useful with the pleasant by not making the aircraft return empty ”, he said.

As soon as quarantine becomes available again, including hotels that were contracted by the multisectoral commission, in addition to public centers, citizens of other destinations will be repatriated, he added.

“The next destination will be Portugal. As you know, we have a community waiting for the return of around 7000 citizens ”, which will represent a high effort in terms of financial and means of transport, he said.

“They are in very difficult conditions, we recognize this. I cannot imagine being three, four months away from home and without resources to survive ”, underlined General Pedro Sebastião.

After that, attention will be given to other centers of Angolans that are spread across Europe and the world, such as Dubai.

"Our intention is that all citizens can return home, we will find ways through our diplomatic missions and those interested," said the official.
