Over 5700 citizens returned to Angola including 2158 from Portugal

The Government announced this Thursday that 5771 Angolan citizens have returned to the country since the closing of the borders, of which 2158 are from Portugal, with 49 cases of covid-19 having been identified.

The information was released by the Minister of State and head of the Security House of the President of the Republic and coordinator of the multisectoral commission to prevent and combat covid-19, Pedro Sebastião.

According to the official, among the 5771 citizens who returned to the country, 2158 came from Portugal, 1470 from South Africa and 512 from Brazil and the rest from other origins (Cuba, Russia, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, India, Turkey, Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo).

With the exception of flights on the 17th and 18th of March, all of them underwent institutional quarantine in public quarantine centers, Calumbo 1 and 2, and in hotels previously selected by the commission and underwent tests, with 49 imported cases identified.

Of these, 54 percent were from Russia, 37 percent from Portugal and 9 percent from other countries (France, Spain, Belarus, Cuba, etc.).

“Today 445 citizens arrived from South Africa and all this effort requires very strong logistics. Only after these leave their quarantine sites, we will go to the next phase, which will possibly be Portugal and Brazil ”, said Pedro Sebastião.

“We know about the great difficulties that are going on in these countries, we are not unaware, the monies that are gone, etc. We have tried to help, here and there, less good situations that can create difficulties for our citizens ”, he stressed, adding that the priority has been the countries with the largest communities of Angolans who have not yet been able to return to their country due to the closing of borders.

According to Pedro Sebastião, the most serious case at the moment "is undoubtedly Portugal due to the very large number" of Angolans who are there (about 7000 citizens), but also Brazil "which also has a considerable number" and Africa southern.

“As soon as conditions are created, an operation will be set up for other locations, everything indicates that it will be Portugal”, he stressed.

As for the costs of flights made by TAAG, they are not counted. "It will then be up to [the company] to present a summary of everything that has been done, everything that has been spent," he said.
