Pitta Grós assumes difficulties in notifying Isabel dos Santos

The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) on Friday assumed difficulties in notifying the businesswoman Isabel dos Santos, in Angola and other countries, admitting that the possibility of issuing an arrest warrant "is open".

:

"In Luanda it has already been notified in the possible places where it could be contacted and there has been no response," Hélder Pitta Grós said at a press conference.

"At the moment we don't know where he will be domiciled, nor where he lives, and this has made it difficult to notify him," he stressed.

The PGR said that attempts have also been made with their companies and that the same was requested from Portugal, without success, so the issuance of a warrant "is an open possibility.

According to Pitta Grós this is a means that serves to "bring a citizen to justice to respond" in a particular case.

"What we want is for her to go to court in order to answer the charges against her," which does not mean that the businesswoman, daughter of the former President, José Eduardo dos Santos, will be arrested, she explained.

"The first objective is to bring her to justice," the OPG reiterated, adding that other cases of citizens have been arrested for questioning and hearing and have been released pending the trial.

Asked at what point the Attorney General's Office will stop trying to notify Isabel dos Santos, choosing to issue an arrest warrant, Hélder Pitta Grós replied that they will "verify what will be the right moment".

The attorney general also stressed that the intention to recover all assets that have been embezzled from the public purse is "a permanent concern," and so the Angolan authorities have resorted to international cooperation.

Isabel dos Santos is targeted in Angola in criminal and civil cases in which the Angolan state claims more than five billion dollars.

The criminal case is based on a complaint by her successor at the head of the state oil company Sonangol, Carlos Saturnino, regarding allegedly irregular money transfers during Isabel dos Santos' administration.

In addition to the daughter of the former President, the defendants are Sarju Raikundalia, a former Sonangol financial administrator, Mário Leite da Silva, Isabel dos Santos' manager, and chairman of the board of directors of BFA, Paula Oliveira, a friend of Isabel dos Santos and administrator of NOS, and Nuno Ribeiro da Cunha, Isabel dos Santos' EuroBic account manager, who died in January.

The businesswoman also saw her bank accounts and shareholdings held in Portugal and Angola.

Isabel dos Santos has always claimed her innocence, accusing the Angolan justice of forging evidence, and claims to be a victim of political persecution.

In January, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalism also revealed over 715,000 files, under the name of 'Luanda Leaks', detailing alleged financial schemes of Isabel dos Santos and her husband, which have allowed them to withdraw money from the Angolan public purse through tax havens.
