Covid-19: death toll in Africa rises to 18,884 in over 891,000 cases

The number of deaths in Africa due to covid-19 has risen today to 18,884, up 409 in the last 24 hours, and there are about 891,000 infected, according to the latest pandemic data on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected is 891,199, plus 19,229 in the last 24 hours, with 540,872 recovered, plus 17,188.

The highest number of cases and deaths of covid-19 continues to occur in southern Africa, with 491,852 infected and 7914 deaths.

In this region, South Africa alone accounts for 471,123 infected and 7497 dead, the most affected country on the continent.

North Africa now has 155,366 infected, with 6519 deaths, and in West Africa cases have risen to 125,350, with 1888 fatalities.

In East Africa there are 72,036 cases and 1,625 deaths, and in Central Africa the infected reached 46,595, with 938 deaths.

Egypt is the second country with more deaths, after South Africa, with 93,356 cases and 4728 deaths, followed by Algeria, with 29,229 infected and 1186 dead.

Among the five countries most affected is also Nigeria, with 42,208 infected and 873 dead, and Sudan, with 11,496 cases and 720 fatalities.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking African countries and according to local authorities, Cape Verde has the highest number of infections, with 2354 infected and 22 dead, while Angola leads in terms of fatalities, with 48 dead and 1078 cases.

Guinea-Bissau registers 1981 positive cases, which resulted in 26 deaths, while Mozambique accounts for 1748 infected and 11 deaths.

Sao Tome and Principe has 868 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, which has caused 15 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 3071 cases and 51 deaths for several weeks, according to Africa CDC, although the Equato-Guinean authorities report fewer positive cases (2350) and the same number of deaths.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to report cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 666,000 lives and infected more than 17 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
