Africa exceeds 18,000 dead and adds up to 859,237 cases of covid-19

The number of deaths in Africa due to the new coronavirus has surpassed the barrier of 18,000 deaths, now accounting for 859,237 infected, of which 506,534 were recovered, according to official data.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of deaths in Africa due to covid-19 rose this Tuesday to 18,160, up 413 in the last 24 hours from 859,237 infected (up 12,926).

The number of recovered from the disease is this Tuesday at 506,534, 14,645 more than the day before.

According to CDC Africa, the highest number of cases and deaths of covid-19 continues to occur in southern Africa: 471,491 infected, 7453 dead and 282,093 recovered. South Africa alone has 452,529 cases and 7067 deaths.

North Africa accounts for 151,192 infected and 6293 dead, while West Africa accounts for 122,042 cases, with 1853 fatalities.

Cases in East Africa now number 68,736, with 1565 deaths, and in Central Africa 45,766 are infected and 896 deaths.

Egypt is the second country with more deaths, after South Africa, with 92,482 cases and 4652 deaths, followed by Algeria with 27,366 infected and 1154 dead.

Among the five countries most affected are Nigeria, with 41,180 infected and 860 dead, and Sudan: 11,424 infected and 720 dead.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking African countries and according to data from local authorities, Cape Verde has the highest number of infections, with 2328 infected and 22 dead, while Angola leads in terms of fatalities, with 41 dead and 950 cases.

Guinea-Bissau registers 1981 positive cases, which resulted in 26 deaths, while Mozambique counts 1701 infected and 11 dead.

Sao Tome and Principe has 749 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, which has caused 14 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 3071 cases and 51 deaths for several weeks, according to Africa CDC, although the Equato-Guinean authorities report fewer positive cases (2350) and the same number of deaths.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to report cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 645,000 lives and infected more than 16 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
