Covid-19: death rate in Africa rises to 11,622 from nearly 492,000 infected

The number of deaths due to covid-19 in Africa rose this Tuesday to 11,622, up 262 in the last 24 hours, and there are almost 492,000 infected, according to the latest figures on the continent's pandemic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected has risen to 491,750, up 15,241 in the last 24 hours, while the number recovered is this Tuesday of 236,366, up 8990.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases (213,134) and accounts for 3409 deaths, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most infected throughout the continent, which this Tuesday passed the 200,000 cases (205,721) and which has 3310 deaths.

North Africa leads the number of deaths (4823), with 113,666 infections.

West Africa has 1,449 deaths out of 86,315 infections, East Africa has 1,336 deaths and has passed the 40,000 mark today (40,491), while Central Africa has 805 deaths out of 38,144 infections.

Egypt, the African country with the most deaths, this Tuesday counted 3422 deaths in 76,222 cases of infection, followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 952 deaths and 15,941 infected.

Among the five countries most affected is also Nigeria, with 654 dead and 29,286 infected, and Sudan, with 608 deaths, despite having a lower number of infections (9894).

As for the Lusophone African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections and deaths, with 1790 cases and 25 deaths.

Cape Verde has 1464 infections and 17 deaths, while Mozambique has 1012 infections and eight deaths.

São Tomé e Príncipe has 719 cases and 13 deaths and Angola has 353 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 19 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 3071 cases and 51 deaths, according to Africa CDC.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 535,000 lives and infected more than 11.52 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
