Death toll in Africa rises to 11,360 out of 476,500 infected with covid-19

The death toll from covid-19 in Africa has risen to 11,360, up 274 in the past 24 hours, and there are more than 476,000 infected, according to the latest pandemic figures on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected has risen to 476,509, plus 13,203 in the last 24 hours, while the number of recovered is 227,376, plus 5072.

Southern Africa records the highest number of cases (203,861) and accounts for 3297 deaths, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most infected across the continent (196,750) and with 3199 fatalities.

North Africa leads the number of deaths (4736), with 112,413 infections.

West Africa counts 1426 deaths out of 84,409 infected, East Africa reports 1131 fatalities in 39,823 cases, while in Central Africa there are 770 deaths in 36,003 infections.

Egypt, the African country with the most fatalities, accounts for 3343 deaths in 75,253 cases of infection, followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 952 fatalities and 15,941 infected.

Among the five most affected countries is Nigeria, with 645 dead and 28,711 infected, and Sudan, with 608 deaths, despite having a lower number of infections (9767).

As for the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau is the one with the most infections and deaths, with 1765 cases and 25 fatalities.

Cape Verde has 1451 infections and 17 deaths, while Mozambique counts 987 infected and eight killed.

São Tomé and Príncipe accounts for 719 cases and 13 deaths and Angola has 353 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 19 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 3071 cases and 51 deaths, according to Africa CDC.
