Angola registered seven new cases of covid-19 this Sunday, bringing the total number of infections to 353, Health Minister Silvia Lutucuta announced.

The new cases, two of local contamination and five without epidemiological link, relate to citizens aged between 32 and 75 years, one female and six male.

Cases were detected in screening at the reference health facilities and testing of direct contacts of other patients with a positive result, as well as travellers who arrived in the country on humanitarian flights.

Angola now has 353 cases of covid-19, of which 19 deaths, 226 active cases and nine requiring special care, including two in critical condition, the government said.

The country has already collected 28,667 samples, of which 353 were positive, 21,914 were negative and 6400 were in process.

The minister stressed that the country "faces a great challenge" but called for calm and tranquility.

According to Silvia Lutucuta, the large increase in the number of cases in the last four weeks is related to non-compliance with individual and collective protection measures. "We still see a lot of people in the street, a lot of young people in gatherings and parties", she pointed out.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 530,000 lives and infected more than 11.2 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

In Africa, there are 11,086 confirmed deaths in more than 463,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics from that continent.
