Agreement between Angola and IFAD provides funding of 30 million to strengthen the agricultural sector

Angola will receive funding of around US$30 million (?26.2 million) to advance the project to improve the resilience of small producers. The amount is the result of an agreement signed this Wednesday in Rome between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Angola.

According to Angop, this money will be used to create infrastructure in rural areas and thus strengthen the country's agricultural sector. These infrastructures aim to boost national production, making it more efficient to place it on the market.

In addition, the project plans to help the vast majority of young people and women vulnerable to climate change, with the main objective of increasing the resilience of farmers.

This project will also support the establishment of climate change adaptation services, covering 35 municipalities in seven provinces: Bengo, Zaire, Uige, Kwanza Norte, Benguela, Cunene and Namibe.

In total, the project is expected to help 218,000 families, of which 65,400 are in the south and 152,000 in the north of the country.

For the families in the south, the money will benefit the households most vulnerable to climate shocks. For those in the north, the money will help small farmers.

The agreement - which is part of a general 150 million dollars project co-financed by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) - was signed by Fátima Jardim, Angola's permanent representative to UN agencies based in Rome, and Gilbert Houngbo, president of IFAD.

At the signing ceremony, Fátima Jardim considered that this understanding represents the good cooperation relations between Angola and IFAD, which aim to fight hunger and reduce rural poverty.

She also sent a message from the Government, applauding Gilbert Houngbo's work and leadership, especially in this difficult phase of covid-19, and thanked AFD and BADEA for helping to improve Angola's food security.
