Speaking at the end of a meeting with her Mozambican counterpart, Margarida Talapa, the president of the national parliament, Carolina Cerqueira, attributed a “special significance” to her visit to Mozambique as part of the celebrations of the country’s 50th anniversary of independence, and advocated the promotion of programs that allow for equality, in terms of numbers, between men and women in the parliaments of both countries.
“We have outlined a joint strategy that will be further developed during the official visit that I will make to the Mozambican parliament later this year, with the aim of promoting programs that promote gender parity, ensuring an equal representation of 50 percent women and 50 percent men in our assemblies,” declared Carolina Cerqueira.
In turn, in a statement issued at the end of the meeting, the president of the Mozambican parliament advocated the strengthening of parliamentary cooperation with Angola, considering it “essential” for the nations.
“In the current parliamentary term, one of the priorities of the Mozambican parliament is to strengthen interparliamentary ties, highlighting the importance of exchanging visits at different levels as a fundamental instrument for consolidating this cooperation,” reads the statement from the office of the president of the Mozambican parliament, Margarida Talapa.
Quoted in the statement, Margarida Talapa considered “the exchange of experiences and solidarity” between the two peoples “fundamental to guarantee the prosperity and sustainable development” of both countries.
Margarida Talapa added that a formal invitation has already been sent to Luanda for the president of the Angolan parliament to visit Mozambique again later this year.
