In a statement, the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, regretted the act of violence that occurred last Friday, which resulted in injuries, and called on the competent bodies to take measures to clarify the situation and hold those responsible accountable.
The statement also expressed solidarity with Apolo Yakuvela, hoping that he would soon resume his duties.
The attack took place in the municipality of Galanga, in the province of Huambo, and UNITA attributed the attack to "individuals identified as members of the MPLA".
According to UNITA, the delegation travelled to the municipality "as part of the new political-administrative division of Angola" to implement party structures, and was "ambushed" by party members who "used violence to try to prevent the free and peaceful exercise of political activity".
UNITA considered that these acts constitute a "serious attack on the life and dignity of the human person" and a "huge setback in the construction of a democratic and law-based State".
Last year, UNITA also denounced incidents of political intolerance and violence, notably an attack on a caravan of MPs during parliamentary proceedings in Cuando Cubango in April 2024, which resulted in ten people being injured.
The MPs protested at the National Assembly, demanding that the perpetrators be held accountable.
