Credit to the economy increases 29 percent in May compared to the same period last year

Credit to the economy increased by 1.4 trillion kwanzas in May, 29 percent more than in the same period last year, the central bank announced on Tuesday.

According to the National Bank of Angola (BNA), the stock of credit to the economy reached 6.2 billion kwanzas in May.

In the period in question, gross credit to the real sector of the economy totaled 1.6 billion kwanzas, an increase of 23.1 percent compared to the same period last year, driven mainly by the increase in resources made available to the extractive industry subsector, which grew by 189 billion kwanzas.

"However, the total credit granted (...) for the promotion of the real sector reached 1.3 billion kwanzas, representing 83.3 percent of the total credit granted to this sector and 17.3 percent of the gross credit portfolio of the banking system", the document states.

In the distribution of total credit to the real sector, in the period under analysis, the manufacturing industry subsector stands out with (44.2 percent), the extractive industries subsector with (33.7 percent), together with the agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing subsectors with (22.1 percent).

In May, gross credit to the non-financial sector amounted to 7.8 trillion kwanzas, an increase of 1.1 trillion kwanzas, of which 87.6 percent represented private sector debt, between private companies and individuals, and 12.4 percent represented public sector debt, that is, public administration and public companies, excluding debt securities.

Non-financial public sector debt, excluding bonds, totaled 966.9 billion kwanzas, of which 65.8 percent was from the public administration and 34.2 percent from public companies.

Private and individual companies' debt increased by 860.2 billion kwanzas, rising from 6 trillion kwanzas in May 2024 to 6.8 trillion kwanzas in May of this year.

Non-financial private companies' debt was 5.3 trillion kwanzas, an increase of 782.5 billion kwanzas, and individuals' debt amounted to 1.5 trillion kwanzas, an increase of 77.6 billion kwanzas.
