University professors call off strike to save school year

Higher education teachers interrupted the strike scheduled until 15 August, the end of the academic year, and hope that “two fractured points” will be addressed by 10 November, under penalty of threatening the “start of the next academic year”.

According to the public secretary general of the Union of Higher Education Teachers (Sinpes), Eduardo Peres Alberto, the decision was taken this Tuesday at an extraordinary general meeting, to present the results of the most recent negotiating round to the class, which was attended by the presence of government representatives.

"We will continue with the academic work until the end of the school year and, if the points claimed are not met, the strike will resume on November 10, which could jeopardize the start of the next school year", said Eduardo Peres Albert.

The higher education teachers' strike was expected to resume this Tuesday, due to lack of understanding between Angolan teachers and the employer, mainly with regard to "decent wages and health insurance", the two points that divide the parties a few years ago.

At the previous negotiation meeting, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Maria do Rosário Bragança, said that "there are no conditions for a salary increase", asking teachers to have a "sense of common sense, because neither side intends to harm the education".
