Higher education teachers to resume strike due to lack of consensus

The Union of Higher Education Teachers (Sinpes) may resume the strike, deliberated at the general assembly of workers on the 27th of this month, given the lack of news from the Government in the resolution of the claims.

"We are just finishing the meeting now, basically what actually happened is that we were invited to say that there is nothing new, in short we can say that", the spokesman for Sinpes told Lusa.

António Augusto stressed that the date of June 27, for the resumption of the strike in case there is no consensus, is part of a deliberation that had decided to interpolate the strike for a month.

According to the spokesman for Sinpes, there are still five days left until the end of the period and the concern was left to the Government in the sense of "still preventing" the strike from returning.

"But for that to happen, we need something tangible to present to affiliates and maybe, in this way, change their minds, because we are at the end of the year", he stressed.

The trade unionist said that teachers are aware that the two points that oppose them to the Government transcend the level of the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Technologies and Innovation, noting that this matter had already been sent to the holder of executive power.

At stake is the salary readjustment, the health subsidy, whose values are out of line with the current reality.

"We are asking for decent wages, we cannot talk about increases, because it is readjustment. If we go back in time we will see that auxiliary teachers were already earning a salary, at the exchange rate at the time of one dollar for 10 kwanzas, equivalent to 3,000 dollars, which today it is equivalent to less than 500 dollars", he pointed out.

The Sinpes spokesman said that the Government claimed that the General State Budget for this year's financial year does not provide for this inclusion.

"This is the third budget since we signed the memorandum of understanding in 2021 and it was basically at the time of budget preparation, that we signed this memorandum, that year it was not included, last year was also the same and funny today, 2023, (...) they say that there was no inclusion of these aspects", he underlined.

António Augusto reiterated that if before the 27th there is any contrary pronouncement from the Government, the assembly will be convened so that the community can reflect on a hypothetical proposal.
