António Costa says he arrived in Luanda with good memories and leaves “with better memories”

The Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, said Tuesday that he arrived in Luanda with good memories and that he is now leaving his second official visit to Angola with better memories, sustaining that all the objectives were accomplished.

:

"The President of Angola, João Lourenço, said that he wanted me to leave with good memories. I told him that I arrived [in Luanda] with good memories and that I wanted to leave with better memories. And I will leave with better memories," António Costa declared.

In a balance of his visit to Angola, the leader of the Portuguese executive highlighted the signing of the new Strategic Cooperation Program (2023/2027), the increase of the Luso-Angolan business credit line from 1.5 to two billion euros, the Portuguese participation in the Liberation Struggle Museum - an emblematic project for Angola - and, on the educational level, the "clear commitment to integrate the Lubango school into the Portuguese School of Luanda.

"These are strong marks of a level of relationship that we now have with Angola from the political and economic points of view and the movement between peoples," he argued.

Before journalists, António Costa also advocated that Angola currently offers a better environment for business, pointing out at this level the existence of a new legal framework.

"In 2018, one of the central themes was for us to start the process of certification of debts. Today, 80 percent of the certified debts are already paid, which represented a great effort by the Angolan State in a difficult context of dramatic global crisis as a result of covid-19. And the certification process continues. Even on Tuesday, President João Lourenço said that he will continue to give strength to this certification process," he said.

For António Costa, there is "an effective commitment of the Angolan State with the Portuguese companies".

"President Lourenço made a clear appeal for Portuguese companies to participate in the privatization processes that the Angolan state will launch," he said.

In relation to visas for the circulation of people, the Prime Minister admitted that this point "is still a problem".

"A mobility agreement was signed under the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), it was a Portuguese proposal, particularly mine. We already have the agreement signed, it has been transposed to national legislation and there is now an effort to apply it that has improved but is still not at the level that I would like it to be," he assumed.

According to the leader of the Portuguese executive, his official visit fulfilled the objectives outlined by his government.

"Besides the traditional areas, there is now a diversification of cooperation sectors, covering tourism or agro-food. I felt a very positive response from Portuguese companies," he added.
