According to the Angolan journalist and activist, member of the Press and Communication Observatory, Simão Hossi, this is the second group of honorees, after another in 2022, with the inauguration scheduled for 14 July.
Simão Hossi told Lusa that the criteria for choosing the honorees included the achievements of various individuals in politics, associations, academia and human rights.
On the mural, located in the municipality of Cazenga, in the Mulemba neighbourhood, behind the Citizenship Wall, the faces of the deceased Mfulupinga Lando Victor (politician and academic), Ricardo de Melo (journalist), Albano Bingo (activist of case 15+2), Elias Fernandes (journalist) and Luís Araújo (activist).
Among the living honorees are the names of Ermelinda Freitas (activist and politician), José Gama (journalist), Filomeno Vieira Lopes (politician), Luís Nascimento (politician), William Tonet (journalist), Nelson Pestana (politician and academic), Fernando Macedo (academic and human rights activist), Laurinda Gouveia, Rosa Conde and Manuel Baptista Tchivonde Nito Alves (activists of the 15+2 case).
The choice of Filomeno Vieira Lopes and Luís Nascimento, both from the Bloco Democrático political party, was due to their civic activism, the first participant in several demonstrations and the second as a lawyer in the trial of 17 Angolan activists, in 2015, in the well-known case 15+2.
"Our main objective is that all those who are still alive and those who are no longer with us can have their deeds remembered", said Simão Hossi, stressing the importance of honoring people while they are alive.
Hossi added that the execution of the mural is dependent on donations and the mobilization of financial resources to continue choosing other faces and "valuing their actions".
