Elections officially scheduled for August 24

João Lourenço announced this Friday, at the beginning of the meeting with the Council of the Republic, the consultative body with which he met, that he intended to call the general elections for August 24, 2022. The President's proposal was confirmed later, after favorable opinions from all stakeholders.

This will be the fifth general election held in the country since 1992.

João Lourenço said that the conditions were created to convene the election, and he was meeting at the Presidential Palace in Luanda with the Council of the Republic, composed of 24 councillors, for that purpose.

Addressing the councillors, the Head of State stated that, having already received the favorable opinion of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and the confirmation that the Constitutional Court is in a position to start receiving party candidacies, he intends to call the elections to the next 24th of August, taking into account that these must take place during the second fortnight of August of the year in which the mandates of the president and deputies to the National Assembly end.

The call also makes it possible to carry out the other tasks of the state whose execution cannot take place without the elections being scheduled, he added.

Various acts carried out by the most different actors depend on the convening of general elections, including the preparation of the final version of the computer file of senior citizens, which must be delivered to the CNE within ten days after the convening of the elections, in which only the citizens who turn 18 by the date of the elections, underlined João Lourenço.

The executive guarantees that the conditions are met for the final data to be sent to the CNE, within the legally defined period.

After receiving this data, the CNE will have the necessary elements for mapping the polling stations and polling stations and preparing the electoral rolls, the President continued.

The start of the process for the presentation of candidacies by the political formations is also dependent on the call for elections, which must take place within 20 days following the entry into force of the act calling for the elections, João Lourenço also said, stressing that conditions for funding are also created. public of the electoral campaign whose attribution is dependent on the validation of the candidacies by the TC.

João Lourenço (MPLA), who is running for a new term, was elected on 23 August 2017, replacing José Eduardo dos Santos after 38 years in power. He took office on 23 September, becoming the country's third president since independence in 1975.

13 parties may compete in the upcoming elections: Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA), União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA), Frente Nacional de Libertação de Angola (FNLA), Bloco Democrático (BD), Partido de Renovação Social (PRS), Aliança Patriótica Nacional (APN), Partido Democrático para o Progresso de Aliança Nacional Angolana (PDP-ANA), Partido de Apoio para a Democracia e Desenvolvimento de Angola-Aliança Patriótica (PADDA-AP), Partido de Aliança Livre de Maioria Angolana (PALMA), Partido Pacífico Angolano (PPA), Partido Nacional de Salvação de Angola (PNSA), who are part of the coalition CASA-CE and the newcomers Partido Nacionalista para Justiça em Angola (P-JANGO) and Partido Humanista de Angola (PHA).
