Council of the Republic calls for increased awareness campaigns on election day

The Council of the Republic positively appreciated all the work carried out around the unofficial electoral registration and recommended the increase of awareness campaigns, especially on 24 August, the day of the general elections.

According to the final communiqué of the meeting, guided by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, the councilors considered the date for holding the general elections in Angola.

The President's consultation body took note of the opinion of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), on the conditions for holding the 2022 general elections, requested by the head of state, and of the information from the Constitutional Court on the preparation of conditions for the process. reception and assessment of candidates from political parties.

The communiqué stresses that the two bodies considered that the necessary conditions are created for the President of the Republic, within the framework of his constitutional and legal powers, to call this year's general elections.

The consultation body of the head of state gave a positive note to the work carried out by the executive, political parties, churches and civil society in the process of updating the unofficial electoral register, recommending an increase in awareness campaigns, mainly on the day of the general elections.

Another recommendation was to increase actions so that "the general elections in 2022 are held on August 24th, on this day a point tolerance should be declared throughout the national territory".

At the end of the meeting, it was not possible for the media to hear the councilors, and shortly afterwards the President of the Republic called for elections.

"Under the terms of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola and the Organic Law on General Elections", after a favorable opinion from the CNE regarding "the existence of conditions for the 2022 general elections to be held within the constitutionally defined period", and after hearing the Council of the Republic, João Lourenço called for general elections for the election of the President of the Republic and the deputies to the National Assembly for 24 August, reads a note from the President's Civil House.

The presidential decree calling the elections takes effect on 6 June.

Angola will choose for the fifth time, since 1992, and the fourth consecutive time, since 2008, the President of the Republic and representatives of the National Assembly.

The head of state, João Lourenço, elected on 23 August 2017, is running for a second term.
