The data are contained in a statement issued by the National Council for Road Traffic and Traffic Planning, led by vice-president Bornito de Sousa, who analyzed the Road Accident Report for the first quarter of the year.
According to the document, the number of accidents increased by 111 cases compared to the same period in 2020, and the same happened to deaths, with 53 more, and to injuries, with 172 more.
Of the 2,890 accidents recorded, hit-and-runs lead the type of accidents, with 35 percent of the total, followed by collisions between cars and motorcycles (21 percent), collisions between cars (14 percent), rollovers (12 percent), collisions between motorcycles (8 percent), collisions against fixed obstacles (7 percent), accidents with special features (2 percent), and crashes (1 percent).
Traffic accidents are the second leading cause of death in Angola, after malaria, according to official statistics.
