Covid-19: Africa with 492 more deaths and 20,063 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded an additional 492 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll since the start of the pandemic to 135,650, and 20,063 newly infected, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of cases on the continent is 5,084,637 and the number recovered is 4,548,655, plus 11,227 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 2,221,087 cases and 66,982 deaths associated with covid-19. This region is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 1,761,066 cases and 58,087 deaths, more than the second most affected African region as a whole.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, reached 1,515,663 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and 45,972 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa has 684,300 infections and 13,431 deaths, and the West Africa region has 478,716 infections and 6347 deaths. Central Africa is the one with the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 184,871 and 2918 respectively.

Egypt, which is the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 15,691 deaths and 274,404 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 13,656 deaths and 372,221 cases, and Morocco, which accounts for the second largest number of infections across the continent, 524,475 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 9217 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 4257 deaths and 274,480 infections, and Algeria, with 3719 deaths and 134,115 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique and Angola now account for the same number of deaths (842). The number of deaths associated with the disease has been particularly mitigated in Mozambique in recent weeks, which has not been the case in Angola.

In contrast, Mozambique registers 71,651 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, and Angola just over half that number: 36,921 cases.
