The Interior Minister, Eugénio César Laborinho, was concerned about the level of crimes committed against children in the country, this year having registered 1427 cases, highlighting the flight to parenthood, child labor and custody dispute.

The minister was speaking at the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between the Integrated Public Security Center (CISP) and the National Children's Institute (INAC), where the minister of Social Action, Family and Women Promotion, Faustina de Alves, also participated.

"It is with some concern that the criminal police bodies still register many crimes of violence against children committed in the family, with emphasis on aggression, sexual harassment, rape, child exploitation, among others," said Eugénio Laborinho, quoted in a note Ministry of Interior.

The agreement signed this Monday by those in charge of CISP and INAC, who represent the two ministries, aimed to “tighten joint mechanisms”, aimed at reducing criminal statistics.

"We think it is urgent to adopt tougher criminal policies, in order to offer more effective protection to victims and to discourage offenders," said the minister.

President João Lourenço also marked International Children's Day, calling for greater attention from parents, guardians, teachers and other training agents.

“We call on parents and guardians, teachers and other training agents to dedicate themselves to the arduous but rewarding task of defending our children, as they are the greatest guarantee of the continued defense of the noble values of patriotism, love of neighbor and of solidarity in building a better country for all, ”said the chief executive.

In a message released by his press secretary, João Lourenço highlighted that the day is celebrated “in a year marked by a global pandemic” that has deprived children of attending classes, playing with friends, living with their families and leading a life normal.

"They are, therefore, affected from a very young age by a potentially traumatic situation, which will possibly mark them for the rest of their lives, if we do not take the appropriate measures to avoid it," said the head of state.

The President stressed that the Government has taken steps to alleviate the crisis caused by covid-19, namely by creating conditions for safe return to school and safeguarding those who are most vulnerable.
