UNITA marks 29 years of Bicesse calling for compliance with agreements

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) marked the 29th anniversary of the Bicesse Accords by calling for compliance with what was agreed with the government as part of the peace and national reconciliation process.

"Unfortunately, 29 years after Bicesse and 18 years after Luena [which ended the civil war in Angola between UNITA and MPLA government forces], the government of Angola, UNITA's partner in the process of Peace and National Reconciliation, has not fully complied with the following: the return of UNITA's Patrimony, the insertion of its staff on the Boards of Directors of Public Companies and the conclusion of the handing over of pensions to retired military personnel", the "Galo Negro" party points out in a statement.

UNITA highlights that the anniversary of the Bicesse Accords takes place "at a particularly difficult time", due to the covid-19 pandemic, asking the executive to pay attention to the sectors most affected, especially families and companies.

He also regretted that 29 years later "acts of human rights violations, exclusion and political intolerance still occur".

The Peace Accords for Angola - Bicesse Accords, were signed in Lisbon in 1991 between the then Angolan president, José Eduardo dos Santos, and the president of UNITA, Jonas Savimbi, and mediated by the Portuguese government, represented by Durão Barroso, at the time Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

The agreement aimed to end the armed conflict and make possible the first legislative elections and, to date, the only presidential election, on 29 and 30 September 1992, which UNITA says was marked "by a widespread fraud with irrefutable evidence, followed by the massacre of thousands of Angolans", including supporters and senior UNITA officials.
