Covid-19: Africa's death toll rises to 4228 in over 147,000 cases

The death toll in Africa due to covid-19 has risen in the past 24 hours to 4228, another 159, and there are more than 147,000 cases in 54 countries, according to the latest pandemic data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the death toll rose from 4069 to 4228 (+159), while the number of infected people rose from 141,535 to 147,099 (+5564).

The same data indicates that the recovery of 61,808 patients was recorded, 2596 more than the previous day.

The region of the continent most affected by the new coronavirus remains North Africa with 1893 deaths in 43,949 cases.

West Africa reports 717 deaths in 35,125 infections while Southern Africa accounts for 707 deaths and 34,888 cases, the majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the highest number of cases on the continent (32,683) and with 683 deaths.

East Africa reports 513 deaths and 17,042 cases, while in Central Africa there are 398 fatalities in 16,095 cases.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (959) and 24,965 infections, followed by Algeria, with 653 fatalities and 9394 infected.

Morocco has a total of 205 fatalities and 7,807 cases, Nigeria has 287 deaths and over 10,000 cases (10,162), while Ghana has 36 deaths and 8070 cases.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the most infections, with 1256 cases, registering eight deaths.

São Tomé and Príncipe accounts for 479 cases and 12 deaths and Cape Verde has 435 infections and four deaths.

Mozambique counts 254 infected patients and two dead and Angola has 86 confirmed cases of covid-19 and four dead.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 1306 cases and 12 deaths, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 370,000 deaths and infected more than 6 million people in 196 countries and territories.

More than 2.5 million patients were considered cured.
