Transport federation calls for good roads to improve mobility

The president of the Federation of Road Transport Associations for Passengers, Goods and Related Products (Fatropma) considered this Friday that the problem of mobility in the country, with emphasis on Luanda, involves improving road infrastructure.

:

António Martins, speaking to Lusa, said that the recently created federation is an integrated platform, where members will be able to present their concerns.

According to António Martins, a few years ago there were only two associations in the transport sector, but the number has grown and there are at least six associations and more than ten cooperatives.

Asked to comment on the entry into force of the social pass, the president of Fatropma said that it was welcome, as it has a social function, benefiting the most economically needy people.

"The social pass coming into force as long as it meets the objectives of its creation is welcome, in fact its implementation has been expected since June 2022", he said.

This week, the Government approved a joint executive decree between the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Transport, on the regulation of the social pass and transport titles for use in the public passenger transport system.

The implementation of the social pass in collective transport, a public transport ticket with a fare subsidy that benefits eligible users, was expected to take effect in 2022, which did not take place.

António Martins stressed that in the recent past, the public company of Transporte Colectivo Urbano de Luanda (TCUL) "already made use of the social pass for its users and there was a lot of support for its acquisition".

"We will wait for the methods and models of its proponents to later draw our conclusions about it", he underlined.

With regard to the problem of mobility in Angola, mainly in the country's capital, Luanda, the president of Fatropma said that the solution was to create "an acceptable road infrastructure for safe and fluid circulation".

"Right now, the concern of the federation is to see the rehabilitation or construction of national roads, the main, secondary, tertiary, access roads and highways, the exclusive corridors for the means of transporting passengers", he stressed.

"Today we see a flood of passengers waiting for these means at our bus and taxi stops, because the means flow with little commercial speed, if we had these circulation routes the problem would obviously decrease", he observed.

Asked whether the floods are not occurring due also to the insufficient number of buses, António Martins considered that in his opinion the problem "does not lie there".

"Because the Minister of Transport at Café Cipra said that urban passenger transport operators, buses, many of them are only putting 50 percent of their fleets into circulation, it is not known why, whether due to the problem of roads or another situation ", he stressed, calling for the supervision of those who are entitled.

Last year, Transport Minister Ricardo de Abreu, quoted by Jornal de Angola, said that the public transport fleet was being increased for Luanda, adding that at the time around 650 buses were available and operational, and it was expected that by June or July 2022, the number reached nearly 800.

According to António Martins "at this very moment the concerns of the operators are the roads", informing that the federation now created has in its initial program visits to all associations for a diagnosis of the sector, with regard to difficulties and constraints.
