Luanda will have buses circulating during the night and dawn

The Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL) plans to make buses available during the night and early morning. As announced by Filipe Cumandala, provincial director of Transport, Traffic and Mobility of Luanda, the capital will have, until the end of the year, a special service of urban collective transport aiming to assist passengers during the referred period.

:

The referred service will operate between 10 pm and 6 am and, according to the official, in an interview to Angop, its main purpose is to extend the opening hours of the buses and, thus, help passengers who need to circulate during that period of time.

The service will be guaranteed by the nine operators that operate in the capital and, according to Filipe Cumandala, each company will provide a bus for that time, within the same zone (normal career routes) assigned to it, due to the license acquired, writes the Angop.

Cited by Angop, the official clarified that the buses will follow a route that will pass close to universities, hospitals, passenger terminals, etc., with a waiting time of no more than one hour.

Regarding dates for the start of operations, the person in charge did not specify numbers, explaining that these will start "as soon as the conditions are created", however, he stressed that the data point to the present year. "There is no precise date, but the operations will start as soon as the conditions are created, however, the data indicate for this year", he said, quoted by Angop.

To this end, according to Angop, GPL, operators and the police are working on the design of better conditions, both technical and security, in order to start operations, and, for example, in the the list of constraints communicated by operators includes problems related to safety at stops, during travel and public lighting.

As for the problems related to urban public transport in the capital, which end up causing floods, long queues, long waiting times and overcrowding, the official admitted that this cannot be solved just by increasing the bus fleet.

According to the director, quoted by Angop, around 92 percent of citizens use the national transport system on a daily basis, reflecting the existence of a high demand for urban and suburban transport, therefore it is necessary to improve secondary and tertiary roads, among other actions.

Improvements in urban public transport services are also requested by passengers, who, according to Angop, complain about waiting times, long queues, overcrowding, etc., and also claim the need to rehabilitate secondary and tertiary roads towards to enable transport to get closer to citizens and the consequent increase in frequencies and routes.

It should be noted that the nine operators (TCUL, Macon, AngoReal, Angoaustral, Impala Express, Cidrália, Rosalina Express and Gira Express) in the capital – which transport more than 10 million citizens of Luanda – offer 75 routes, between 05:30 am and at 8 pm, daily, charging 50 kwanzas per trip.
