Marcy Lopes, who was speaking as coordinator of the Commission for Reconciliation in Memory of Victims of Political Conflicts (Civicop), at a meeting to debrief activities, reacted to the news that DNA tests carried out on the bones handed over by the Government to the relatives of some victims of the 27 de Maio did not correspond with their identities.

"Lately, a series of comments have been circulating, which seek to attack the credibility of the process and work of this commission", said Lopes.

The official stressed that "the Angolan Executive is the first and main interested party for this process to run smoothly, in a suitable, credible manner and complying with all technical legal and other technical procedures that are imposed so that the results are as most credible and suitable possible".

At issue is a letter from family members of Edgar Valles, Sita Valles, José Van-Dúnem and Rui Coelho, in which they expressed indignation at the situation, demanding the truth.

According to Marcy Lopes, the Government acquired the necessary equipment that allows the Criminalistics Laboratory of Luanda to carry out forensic medical examinations, with its own elements, having successfully carried out the work that culminated in the identification of the people, honored and who consequently received a ceremony, a funeral, condign, adequate to its size.

The Civicop coordinator stressed that "the respective exams were carried out responsibly and the results obtained were handed over to the family members in order to allow the families to carry out parallel exams".

"This particular is important, since families have the option, if they wish, to look for other specialists, in order to obtain results compared to those presented by the laboratory", he stressed.

Marcy Lopes informed that the work continues and that the objective is to obtain the greatest possible number of positive results, as well as to ensure that the commission's work reaches its successful conclusion.

"And may we, in the end, all embrace and forgive each other as children of the same homeland and members of the same society," he said.

The official stressed that 4234 requests for death certificates were received and 2687 death certificates were issued, of which part of these were issued in the context of the May 27 episode, adding that material and logistical conditions were created for the packaging of the exhumed remains.

On 27 May 1977, an alleged attempt at a coup d'état, in an operation allegedly led by Alves Bernardo Batista "Nito Alves" – then Minister of Internal Administration - on 11 November 1975, the date of Angola's independence, to October 1976, it was violently repressed by the Government.

Civicop has foreseen, among other activities, the follow-up of the construction works of the memorial to the victims of political conflicts, included in the General State Budget for this year.

In 2019, the President, João Lourenço, created Civicop in charge of the general plan to honor the victims of political conflicts and two years later apologized on behalf of the State "for the great evil that were the executions" during the massacre of May 27, 2019. 1977.
