Vice-President says that defending peace and democracy is a “challenge for all women”

The Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, recognized that peace and democracy “represent inalienable and unseizable assets of our peoples, and their defense is a challenge for all women”.

:

The statement was made this Thursday, during her speech at the opening of the first International Women's Forum for Peace and Democracy, which will run until Friday, in Luanda, under the motto "Technological Innovation as a Reaching Tool for Food Security and Combating Drought on the African Continent".

"It is more than fair to recognize that peace and democracy represent inalienable and unseizable assets of our peoples, their defense being a challenge for all women, in every place and at all times, without which we will not be able to promote the fundamental rights inherent to the human person, the values of development and prosperity", she said.

On the occasion, the deputy PR also said that "the role of women must be highlighted in different areas, namely, in politics, in the economy, in science and innovation, but also in music, culture and sport, deserving special attention to women in rural areas, the fight against early pregnancy, the promotion of schooling and the fight against poverty, in accordance with the international commitments assumed" by States and governments.

Esperança da Costa also took the opportunity to recall that the United Nations Security Council "unanimously approved", in October 2000, resolution 1325, "which reaffirms the importance of women's participation and the inclusion of a gender perspective in peace negotiations, humanitarian plans, peacekeeping operations, governance and post-conflict peacebuilding".

She added that, as a Member State, the country "has promoted equal rights and opportunities, as well as the implementation of the National Plan of Action for the Implementation of Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security", further noting that "Angola has achieved gender equality in more than 40 percent of women in political life and leadership".

Still during her speech, the Vice-President of the Republic referred that "in all spheres, women increasingly assume a new posture, a new paradigm, regardless of geography and field of action, and their multifaceted role is no longer limited to the administration of the home, the education and care of children".

"Today, her role also involves leading initiatives in education, research, technology, innovation and socio-economic development. This is the portrait of the 'new woman', who embraces opportunities and revolutionizes empowerment, motherhood , the family and volunteering, in this society in full transformation", she highlighted.

Esperança da Costa also considered it necessary to continue "overcoming barriers and socio-cultural constraints, stereotypes and prejudice", since the removal of these "barriers is to make women protagonists and agents of the transformations of our time".

"Humanity's current challenges require a closer look at the training and specialization of women. It is urgent to strengthen their training, particularly in literacy, equitable access to quality education, technical and professional education, in line with the 4. º Sustainable Development Goal", added the official.

Among other aspects, Esperança da Costa also took the opportunity to highlight that Angola is a country of peace, intending to "continue to contribute" to an African continent and a "reconciled, democratic and peaceful world".

"Angola is a country of peace with a leader of peace, which is why we want to continue contributing to an Africa and a world that is reconciled, democratic and peaceful", she indicated, adding that "in the relentless pursuit of these values, the head of state Angolan, as Champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa, has been developing a series of initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and inclusive political processes that lead to the resolution of the existing conflict in the east of the DRC, in the Central African Republic, in Sudan, and other parts of Africa".

"Within the scope of these efforts, and taking into account the mandate given by the African Union to the Angolan Head of State, as Champion of Peace and National Reconciliation in Africa, it is intended that the Angolan initiatives, still limited to the Great Lakes Region, extend to all areas of the African continent where situations of insecurity and conflict still persist", she added.
