Former opposition leader announces book “without taboos” on deaths of UNITA leaders to oppose “detractors”

Isaías Samakuva, who was speaking during a meeting promoted by the Angolan Students Movement (MEA), in Luanda, said that he is writing a memoir, which will be supported by a wartime collection that he has kept outside the country.

"I felt I needed to get more data involved (for the book) and that's what I've been busy with these last seven months, but many of the facts I want to talk about are part of controversial issues that were generally addressed by our opponents or by our detractors", he said.

He pointed to the death of some leaders of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), "stories told by our detractors and deserters from the party", as facts that he guarantees to narrate "without taboos" to oppose other versions.

UNITA "has not yet presented any real version of it (the story of the death of leaders) and I think it is not taboo at all, if it was taboo today it is no longer taboo for me, at least", said Samakuva, who led UNITA between 2003 and 2019.

"So, it is necessary that the Angolans know what actually happened, what are the causes and how it happened", he assured amid applause from the audience present at the meeting.

Samakuva, who presided over UNITA after the death of Jonas Savimbi, the party's founding leader in 2002, was the speaker at the first edition of the space "Reencontro com a História", held on Friday by the MEA.

The politician and diplomat, trained in social sciences and international relations, even refused, at the time, the title of doctor, as he has been called over the years, explaining that he did not defend his doctoral thesis in international relations.

"I'm not a doctor, I didn't defend my doctoral thesis, because I've always been called to respond to the country's challenges, so that conclusion of training was being postponed", he said.

He assured that at the age of 76 he is in active politics, he never dreamed of being president of UNITA, now led by his successor Adalberto Costa Júnior, referring that he reached the presidency of the party by invitation of many people.

In this, his first public appearance as a speaker at an event, after 16 years in charge of the black rooster party, Samakuva also assured that he had fulfilled his duty.

"And personally I am satisfied with what I did", referring, however, that he was president of UNITA "by an imperative".

"That wasn't a party, but it was a good experience, I learned a lot", he shot.

Speaking for an audience composed mostly of students, Samakuva also considered that education in Angola "collapsed", mainly due to the way "it is structured, the quality of the processes and the way it is taught".

"It is unacceptable that someone who finishes a higher education course does not know how to write a sentence without mistakes, we have these cases", he lamented.

He asked the students for continuous training, with technical-scientific and technological tools, and the authorities are committed to qualification and professional technical training for young people for the job market.
