Angola wants reform of the UN Security Council that today “does not reflect world reality”

The President, João Lourenço, defended this Wednesday the “reformulation” of the United Nations Security Council, “for not reflecting” today's world reality and the interests of Africa, Latin America and a part of Asia.

:

"As for the need to give Africa more voice in the world, the way to do it is to insist with international institutions, namely with the United Nations, for the need to reformulate the United Nations Security Council", said João Lourenço, when asked by journalists on this topic, after a joint press conference with his Senegalese counterpart, Macky Sall, who started a state visit to the country this Wednesday.

The official stressed that the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council "are, for the most part, if not all, the great powers that won the Second World War that ended 77 years ago".

"Which means to say that this Security Council, which takes the major decisions on the world situation, no longer reflects the reality of today", because "other poles of power have emerged" and "the world has evolved in all domains", noticed.

He added: "Not all of us feel well represented in this international institution, particularly Africa, Latin America and a part of Asia do not feel well represented, their interests are not defended when necessary".

The President also assured that "he will continue to defend, and with greater sharpness, the need for the reformulation of the United Nations Security Council".

The "conflict in Ukraine tells us that this situation is increasingly urgent if we want our displaced people and refugees and all those who are victims of natural disasters to have the same treatment", he stressed.

Senegalese President Macky Sall said he agrees with João Lourenço's arguments, considering that the rules that define countries, in that United Nations body, were structured in the scenario in which African countries "were just colonies".

"But today Africa is not well represented, namely in the UN Security Council, in other international bodies, and that is what we are fighting for as justice, in the interests of all parties", pointed out the also president of the African Union.
