Opposition “demands” immediate publication of list of registered citizens for general elections

Opposition political parties “demanded” this Thursday the “immediate publication” of the list of senior citizens registered in Angola and abroad, as part of the general elections scheduled for August, to guarantee transparency and electoral fairness.

:

The position is contained in a statement issued this Thursday from a joint meeting of the presidents of the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA), Adalberto Costa Júnior, of the Convergência Ampla de Salvação de Angola – Coligação Eleitoral (CASA-CE), Manuel Fernandes, of the Partido de Renovação Social (PRS), Benedito Daniel, of the Frente Nacional de Libertação de Angola (FNLA), Nimi a Simbi, of the Bloco Democrático (BD), Filomeno Vieira Lopes, and the coordinator of the political project PRA-JÁ Servir Angola, Abel Chivukuvuku.

For the opposition, the immediate publication of the list of senior citizens registered in Angola and abroad, "under the terms of the law", should allow them to check their inclusion in the Database of Senior Citizens (BDCM).

The electoral process, after the official electoral registration in Angola and abroad, was the focus of this joint meeting that took place this Thursday, in Luanda.

"The subscribing presidents also expressed concern about the violation of paragraph 4 of article 17 of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola on the right to impartial treatment of political parties by the public press and the right to democratic opposition", refers in the communiqué.

"Equal treatment" of political parties by the public media is also another "demand" of the leaders of UNITA, CASA-CE, PRS, FNLA, BD and PRA-JÁ Servir Angola.

The next general elections in Angola, the fifth election in the country's political history, are scheduled for the second half of August.

Fourteen million voters are registered to vote in the next general elections, scheduled for August, according to the provisional computer file for older citizens delivered last week by the Government to the National Electoral Commission (CNE), but which may still undergo changes.

According to the Minister of Territory Administration, Marcy Lopes, who delivered the file to the president of the CNE, Manuel Pereira da Silva, the process results from a legal obligation after the first sample.

At least 14 million voters are included in the provisional file that results from the unofficial and in-person electoral registration process that took place in Angola and abroad on September 23, 2021 and April 7, 2022, after extension.

Marcy Lopes explained that the numbers "may reduce, depending on the removal of the database of deceased senior citizens and people who are convicted by a final decision", until the time of delivery of the final file.

For the first time, the official electoral registration covered Angolan citizens residing abroad, having registered around 18,000 citizens who are already on the provisional register.

The final computer file of citizens with active electoral capacity will be delivered to the CNE within 10 days after the call for elections by the President, João Lourenço.
